I Don't Want to Live in This World Anymore

I don’t want to live in this world anymore.

A world where people are perpetually broken and lashing out at others. A world where the mandate to love one’s neighbour is put aside out of fear for oneself. A world where leaders preach hate; where people worship the incarnation of their prejudices; and where culture listens to the vacuous opinions of reality TV celebrities over the reasoned conclusions of people who spend their lives considering issues.

I don’t want to live in this world anymore.

A world where our only solution to violence is more violence; where the right to do violence is more important the right to seek healing; where partisan politics is more important than people’s lives; and where “thoughts and prayers” have become a shallow substitute for mourning a life lost.

I don’t want to live in this world anymore.

A world where people who suffer from natural disasters only receive our compassion and help if they are the right type of people, in the right part of the world, and only as long as out attention span can hold. A world where it’s actually a matter of cost/benefit analysis to save hundreds of lives back home, and assumed it’s not worth the investment at all to save thousands of lives on the other side of the world.

I don’t want to live in this world anymore.

A world where shareholder profits matter more than paying employees living wages, or ethical business practices, or social responsibility, or even quality products or services. Where the wealthy rig the system to consolidate their wealth while the poor get poorer. Where people almost universally choose to keep someone else in poverty rather than to diminish their level of affluence. Where we hold onto our “stuff” like Gollum clutching the one ring, and all other considerations become secondary.

I don’t want to live in this world anymore.

Where the church has acquiesced to the state. Where people who claim to follow Christ have difficulty differentiating the cross and the flag and deciding where their true allegiance lays. Where personal political postures get baptized by proof texts and the search for an authentic Christian position is only valued if it confirms pre-existing values and bias. Where sanctuaries have been replaced by the echo chambers of social media, and where the prophetic voice has been silenced.

I don’t want to live in this world anymore because I am a product of this world. And I don’t know how to transcend it. I don’t know how to rise above it, and I don’t know how to better it. I don’t want to live in this world because I feel helpless against it, and like an alien in it. And so I pray the only prayer that I can – the only prayer that seems appropriate – the only prayer my heart can muster.

“Come Lord Jesus.” Save us from this hell of our own making.
