Spiritual Gifts: Where They Come From
Say: Today we’re learning that the Holy Spirit can live in us. What do you think that means?
Watch “Andy’s X-Ray” teaching video (download here)
Say: Why isn’t the Holy Spirit something you can see on an X-ray? Cammie explained that the Holy Spirit is “the presence of God that’s always with us.” How does that help you understand the Holy Spirit? Despite what Andy thought, you can’t see the Holy Spirit in an X-ray. But that doesn’t make him any less real! When we believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in us. We can’t see him on an X-ray, but we can see him by how he helps us live right and comforts us when we’re upset.
Spiritual Gifts: Where They Come From (1 Corinthians 12:1-6, 11; John 14:15-31; 16:5-15)
Say: We don’t always like to be alone. Share about a time you didn’t like to be alone
When we’re friends with God, he’s always with us, even though we can’t see him. That means we’re never really alone. Let’s play a game to see what that’s like.
Have kids each choose a partner and stand facing their partner, about an arm’s-length apart. Ask kids to close their eyes.
Say: If you wake up in the middle of the night because there’s a loud storm outside, you might feel alone. Encourage kids to reach out and hold their partners’ hands, while still keeping their eyes closed.
Say: We couldn’t see our partner, but when we reached out our hands, they were right there. We can’t see the Holy Spirit, but we can remember that he’s always right there to take care of us when we’re afraid.
Say: If you go to a new school or a new class at church and you don’t know anyone, you might feel alone. Encourage kids to reach out and hold their partners’ hands, while still keeping their eyes closed.
Say: Again, we can’t see our partner, but when we reached out our hands, they were right there. Even though we can’t see the Holy Spirit, we never have to feel alone, because he’s always there with us.
Say: Like our partners are there even though we can’t see them, the Holy Spirit is always there, too. And when we’re happy, he celebrates with us!
Say: Our friend the Holy Spirit even gives us special gifts or talents to love and help others. Talents are things that you can do really well. All the special gifts or talents we have are because God is with us.
Ask: What are some things you’re good at?
Say: Our friend God made us, so he made us be able to do really great things. These special talents help us show love in different ways.
If God’s Spirit gives you a heart to do things for others, pretend to carry a tray like this. Lead kids to pretend to carry a tray in their arms.
If God’s Spirit gives you a heart to help sad or sick people, make a hug pose. Lead kids to hug themselves.
If God’s Spirit gives you a heart to help others learn new things, stand like a teacher. Lead kids to stand with their hands on their hips like they know what they’re talking about.
If God’s Spirit gives you a heart to share your things with others, stick out your hand like you’re sharing a toy. Lead kids to reach out a hand and pretend to give something to a pretend person standing in front of them.
Say: Look at all these different special gifts we have here. When we’re friends with God, God’s Spirit lives in us and guides us. God’s Spirit gives us special gifts so we can love and care for others really well!
Sing a Song
Lead kids in singing the following song to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell.”
God’s Spirit lives in us.
God’s Spirit lives in us.
He guides us and he gives us gifts to love everyone!
